Deep dives into IPL strategy, history, and the forces shaping modern cricket
What a Par Score Actually Looks Like at the Women's Asia Cup
India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh average 117.6 in our records, well below the 133.1 that full-member women's T20 cricket produces as a whole. The gap is worth understanding before the knockouts.
Two Thirds of Women's T20 Internationals Are Not Between the Teams You Watch
Across the 2,100 women's T20 internationals in our records, most involve an associate nation. The scoring gap between those matches and full-member cricket is 21 runs an innings.
The Fastest Scorers in One-Day Cricket: Buttler Clears 116
Jos Buttler has scored at 116 runs per hundred balls in our one-day records, the quickest of anyone with a substantial sample. AB de Villiers did it at 101 while averaging 53.9.
Home Advantage in the IPL Is Smaller Than You Think
Home sides have won 53.5 per cent of IPL matches in our data. That is a real edge, and it is also barely more than a coin toss, which says something about how the league is built.
The One-Day Converters: de Kock, Kohli and the Art of Not Stopping
Quinton de Kock turned 42.6 per cent of his fifty-plus scores into hundreds in our one-day records. Virat Kohli made 54 hundreds, more than anyone, at almost the same rate.
Fifty Is Not the Hard Part: Who Actually Converts in Test Cricket
Younis Khan turned 53 per cent of his scores past fifty into hundreds, the best rate in our Test records. Most very good players sit closer to one in three.
265 to Win, and They Got There: The Biggest IPL Chases in Our Data
The largest successful chase in the IPL matches we hold came in Delhi in April 2026, when a target of 265 was hunted down. Four of the six biggest have come since 2024.
The IPL Grounds Where Batting First Is a Mistake
Sides batting first have won just 36 per cent at Sharjah and 51 per cent at Hyderabad. The same toss decision is worth very different things depending on where you are standing.
Chasing Wins More IPL Matches Than Batting First, and It Is Not Close
Across 899 completed IPL matches in our data, the side batting first won 409 of them. That is 45.5 per cent, which makes the toss worth more than home advantage.
The All-Rounder Test: Only Six Players in Twenty Years Pass It
There is one honest definition of a Test all-rounder: your batting average must beat your bowling average. Across every career in our records, only six players with a substantial workload in both disciplines clear it, and the margins say a great deal.
Test Cricket's Fastest Scorers: Brook and Duckett Hold the Ceiling
Aggressive Test batting is treated as a recent English invention. Our records say the fastest scorer of the era retired in 2013, and that the strike rate table is quietly ruined by tailenders unless you make it earn its place.
663 Wickets, and the Bowler Who Takes Them Fastest Is Not on the Podium
Josh Hazlewood passed 300 Test wickets in Darwin this week, so we went through every Test career in our records. James Anderson leads on volume by a distance. On the measure that asks how long a bowler makes you wait, somebody else wins, and it is not close.
322: The Biggest T20 Total in Our Data Was Not Scored by a Test Nation
Austria made 322 for 7 against Hungary in June, with 164 off 57 balls at the top and 93 off 26 in the middle of it. It sits above every IPL, Big Bash and World Cup innings we hold, and the story of how our list looks is a small lesson in what a database does and does not know.
The 300 Barrier: What 1,747 One Day Innings Say About a Number That Stopped Meaning Anything
Three hundred used to win a one day international. In our data it is reached in a quarter of complete first innings, it peaked in 2019 at 41 per cent, and it has fallen back twice since. The 300 story is not a straight line upwards, and the reason is the calendar.
How Often Does a T20 Batter Actually Reach Fifty? We Counted 60,381 Innings
The answer is 9.3 per cent, and even for openers it is only 18. That single fact is why we publish a range of outcomes for every batter instead of one predicted score, and it is worth understanding whoever you follow the game with.
The Six Hitters: Who Clears the Rope Most Often in Our Data
Kohli tops the IPL six count. Suryakumar Yadav tops the T20 international one. But counting sixes rewards whoever batted longest, so we also worked out the rate, and on that measure one name beats everybody by a distance most people will not expect.
T20's Great Change Happened in the First Six Overs, Not the Last Five
Everyone credits the death overs for modern T20 scoring. Our ball-by-ball data says otherwise. Across fourteen IPL seasons the powerplay run rate has risen by nearly three runs an over, while the death rate has gained less than one. The revolution happened while the field was still up.
What Is a Par Score? We Measured It Across 3,740 T20 Matches
Commentators say it constantly. Nobody defines it. A par score is simply the total that wins about half the time, so we went through every completed T20 match in our database and worked out exactly where that line sits, competition by competition. It is not where most people think.
Test Cricket Stopped Drawing: 847 Matches of Our Own Data
In 2009, more than a third of all Test matches were drawn. In 2024, one in twenty five. We now hold every ball of 847 Tests played since 2005, and the numbers show the draw did not fade slowly. It fell off a cliff, and the reason is not the one most people reach for.
The Women's T20I Scoring Revolution: What 584 Innings of Our Own Data Show
Everyone senses the women's game is changing. Almost nobody has put numbers on it. We hold ball-by-ball records for 290 women's T20 internationals, and they show a scoring rise that is, season for season, moving faster than the men's game did.
AnalysisDjr xi / CC BY-SA 3.0Every Men's T20 World Cup Final, By the Numbers: Why Finals Are a Different Game
Ten finals, from Johannesburg in 2007 to 2026. We hold every ball of all of them. Line them up and a pattern appears that contradicts everything modern T20 has taught us about scoring: the biggest match of the tournament is almost always the quietest.
How IPL Scoring Exploded: 14 Seasons of Ball-by-Ball Data Analysed
We hold every ball of the IPL from 2013 to 2026 in our own database. Run it season by season and one of the clearest trends in modern sport appears: the average innings has gained almost 40 runs, and the 200 score has gone from a freak event to a weekly one.
