IPL Run Prediction Today — How Player Score Forecasts Work

Predictions12 March 2026📖 5 min read

How do we predict how many runs a batsman will score today? A guide to understanding run bucket predictions and what they mean for IPL 2026.

One of the most popular questions during IPL season is "How many runs will my favourite player score today?" At CricNerd, we answer this with our batting run bucket predictions — probabilistic forecasts that tell you not just IF a player will score, but how MUCH they are likely to score.

What Are Run Predictions?

Unlike predicting a single exact score — which would be misleadingly precise — we predict the probability of a batsman scoring within specific ranges:

0-25 runs: A relatively low score, which might mean an early dismissal or a slow innings. 26-50 runs: A solid contribution that impacts the match. 51-75 runs: An excellent innings, typically a half-century performance. 76-100+ runs: A match-defining knock worthy of Player of the Match.

Each range is assigned a probability based on the specific context of today's match.

Factors That Drive Today's Prediction

When generating today's run prediction for a player, our AI model considers several match-specific factors:

Recent Form: A batsman who has scored 45, 60, and 55 in their last three innings is in a different zone compared to one who has failed recently. We weight recent form heavily because momentum is real in T20 cricket.

Opposition Bowling: Not all bowling attacks are equal. A batsman facing a depleted bowling lineup has higher probabilities in the upper ranges. Against a world-class attack, the 0-25 bucket probability increases.

Venue Conditions: At the high-scoring Chinnaswamy in Bengaluru, a batsman's 51+ probability might be 25% higher than at the spin-friendly Chepauk in Chennai. Venue dramatically changes scoring expectations.

Batting Position: Openers face more deliveries and have fielding restrictions in their favour. Middle-order batsmen often bat under more pressure with fewer resources. Position matters.

Player vs Opponent History: Some batsmen consistently perform well against certain teams. Whether it is bowling matchups, psychological confidence, or tactical reasons, these patterns are captured by our model.

How to Read Today's Prediction

Let us say our model predicts for Virat Kohli today: 0-25: 35% | 26-50: 30% | 51-75: 22% | 76-100+: 13%

This tells you: - Getting out cheaply (0-25) is the most common outcome even for top players — this is normal in T20 cricket where career averages are 25-30. - There is a 35% chance (22% + 13%) of a 50+ score — that is strong, suggesting conditions favour this batsman today. - A 13% chance of 76+ means roughly one in eight times in similar conditions, he would produce a match-winning knock.

Why Probabilities Beat Single Predictions

Anyone can say "Kohli will score 45 today." But what does that actually mean? If he scores 43 or 47, was the prediction right or wrong?

Run bucket predictions avoid this trap. They honestly represent the range of likely outcomes. They give you a framework for understanding what to expect rather than a single number that will almost certainly be wrong.
