What the Numbers Mean
This is the part worth getting right, because the obvious reading is the wrong one. When the page shows a figure like 61.5% for the home side at a ground, that is the record of every home side at that ground, across every match we hold there. It is not the record of the club you picked. Those two things come apart badly: at Chidambaram the home-side figure covers 65 matches, and Chennai were not the home team in 13 of them.
The away figure is simply 100 minus the home figure, so it is not a rate about the away club at all. And if you have not chosen a ground, the number you are looking at is the league-wide home advantage, which is the same for every pairing on the site.
A club's own record at a ground is shown separately, and that one really is about them. Read the sentence under the figures rather than the figures alone: it names exactly what population the percentage was computed over.
A 58-42 split represents a meaningful but not overwhelming advantage. In cricket, the "underdog" with 42% still wins nearly half the time, which is why IPL matches are so exciting.
Predictions closer to 50-50 indicate a very evenly matched contest where small factors like the toss, individual brilliance, or a bit of luck could swing the result either way.
