How Often Does a T20 Batter Actually Reach Fifty? We Counted 60,381 Innings
The answer is 9.3 per cent, and even for openers it is only 18. That single fact is why we publish a range of outcomes for every batter instead of one predicted score, and it is worth understanding whoever you follow the game with.
Here is a question that sounds simple and turns out to explain most of what is confusing about T20 cricket.
If you pick a batter at random, in any T20 match, how likely are they to score fifty?
We hold 60,381 individual innings in our T20 database, across international cricket and the major leagues. So we counted.
The answer: 9.3 per cent
Just over one innings in eleven reaches fifty.
The full distribution is more sobering:
- 46 per cent of innings end under 10 runs.
- 20 per cent finish between 10 and 19.
- 25 per cent finish between 20 and 49.
- 8.7 per cent reach 50 to 99.
- 0.53 per cent reach a hundred, which is one innings in every 190.
The average T20 innings in our data is 18.2 runs, at a strike rate of 128.
Read that again if you follow fantasy cricket, or if you have ever been annoyed at a batter for getting out cheaply. Failing is the normal outcome. It is what the format is made of.
Openers do better, and still fail more than half the time
Batting position changes everything, because it changes how many balls you get.
- Opening (positions 1 and 2): 18 per cent of innings reach fifty. About 48 per cent reach 20.
- Number 3: 15 per cent. Number 4: 12.1 per cent.
- Number 5: 7 per cent. Number 6: 3.3 per cent.
- Number 7: 1.4 per cent. Number 8: 0.6 per cent.
An opener, the most protected position in the batting order, reaches fifty a little under one innings in five, and fails to reach twenty more than half the time.
By number six, a fifty is a once a season event. By number eight it barely exists: 0.6 per cent, which is about one innings in 170.
Competitions differ, and the direction may surprise you
Fifty is reached in 11.8 per cent of IPL innings, 10.5 per cent in the PSL, 9.2 per cent in the Big Bash and 8.7 per cent in men's T20 internationals.
The IPL is the easiest place in our data to make a big score, which fits everything else we have measured about it: higher par scores, faster powerplays, flatter surfaces.
Why we tell you this instead of predicting a score
This is the honest reason our player predictions are shaped the way they are.
If we told you a batter will score 34, we would be wrong essentially every time, and confidently wrong, which is worse. The distribution above is not a rounding error around a central number. It is a genuinely wide spread where the single most likely outcome, for almost every batter in the world, is a low score.
So we publish the probability of each scoring range instead. It is less dramatic than a single number, and it is the only version that respects what 60,381 innings actually look like. When our numbers say a batter has, say, a one in three chance of passing twenty, that is a real statement about a real distribution, and it can be checked afterwards.
A single predicted score cannot be checked in any meaningful way. It is always wrong, so it never tells you anything.
What this means when you watch
A batter out for 8 has not failed unusually. They have done the most common thing in the format.
The player who reaches fifty twice in a tournament has done something genuinely rare, especially outside the top four.
Judging a middle order batter by fifties is a category error. At number six, the job is 20 off 11, and our data says a fifty there happens once in thirty innings.
Coverage and method
Individual innings are counted from the scorecards in our own database: IPL from 2013, men's T20 internationals from 2017, women's T20 internationals from 2020, plus the Big Bash, the PSL, the CSA T20 Challenge and the men's and women's T20 World Cups. Innings where a player is listed but did not bat are excluded.
Positions are as recorded on the scorecard, so a night watchman or an unusual promotion counts where it happened rather than where the player usually bats.
The bottom line
Nine per cent. That is how often a T20 innings reaches fifty, across sixty thousand attempts.
Any number that pretends to predict a single score in a sport built on that distribution is selling certainty that does not exist. We would rather give you the shape of the thing.
