IPL 2026 by the Numbers: 65 Totals Past 200, and the Highest-Scoring Match We Have on Record

IPL 2026 finished on May 31 with Royal Challengers Bengaluru beating Gujarat Titans by five wickets in the final, chasing down 155 with twelve balls to spare. We now hold all 74 matches of the season ball by ball, so here is the season told entirely in numbers we computed ourselves.

Two hundred stopped being a big score

Across 147 completed innings, 65 reached 200 or more. That is not a handful of outliers, it is close to half of every innings played. 88 innings passed 180. Only seven finished under 120.

The average completed innings total was 186.7.

For context on how far that is from the IPL of a decade ago: in 2013, the first season our ball-by-ball data covers, the average was in the 140s. A total that would have won a match comfortably then now loses one.

The highest-scoring match in our record

On April 25 in Delhi, Delhi Capitals made 264 for 2 in their twenty overs. Punjab Kings chased it down, reaching 265 for 4 with seven balls to spare.

That is 529 runs in 40 overs of cricket, and it is the highest match aggregate anywhere in our ball-by-ball database. KL Rahul made 152 from 67 balls in the first innings, the largest individual score of the season, and it was not enough to win.

The next four highest innings totals of the season: Sunrisers Hyderabad's 255 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru on May 22, Punjab Kings' 254 against Lucknow Super Giants on April 19, Royal Challengers Bengaluru's 254 against Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 1, and their 250 against Chennai Super Kings on April 5.

Chasing won the season

Of the 72 matches that produced a result, 45 were won by the side batting second and 27 by the side batting first. Sixty-two per cent of results went to the chasing team.

That is worth sitting with, because it runs against the instinct that a 200-plus total on the board wins games. In IPL 2026 it frequently did not. When both sides can score at ten an over, knowing the target is worth more than setting a big one.

The batter who broke the sixes column

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi hit 72 sixes in 16 innings. The next best in the season was 43.

He scored 776 runs at a strike rate of 237.3, which means he was scoring at nearly two and a half runs per ball across a full season, and he cleared the rope on average once every 4.5 balls he faced. Our database records his date of birth as March 2011, making him 15 years old for the whole tournament.

The leading run scorers behind him: Shubman Gill 732 at a strike rate of 163.0, Sai Sudharsan 722 at 158.0 with eight fifties, and Virat Kohli 675 at 165.8, whose average of 56.25 was the best of anyone in the top ten.

Fourteen different batters made a century. Sanju Samson made two.

The bowlers who survived it

Taking wickets in this environment is one thing, controlling runs is another, and almost nobody managed both.

Kagiso Rabada led the wicket table with 29 in 17 innings, at an economy rate of 9.68. Bhuvneshwar Kumar took 28 and was the only bowler near the top of the list to concede under eight an over, at 7.95, with the highest dot-ball percentage among the leading wicket takers at 39.4 per cent. Jofra Archer took 25 at 9.32.

The most economical bowler among the leading wicket takers was Jason Holder at 7.57 for 17 wickets. Reading down the rest of that list, economy rates of 9.5 and above are normal, and two bowlers with 16 or more wickets went for over ten an over. Wickets in IPL 2026 were bought, not saved.

Everything above comes from our own ball-by-ball data for the 74 matches of IPL 2026, which we hold in full. Where we compare against earlier seasons, our coverage begins in 2013, so any statement about "the IPL's history" in this piece means 2013 onwards and nothing older.

One match, Kolkata Knight Riders against Punjab Kings on April 6, was abandoned after 3.4 overs with no result, and is excluded from the results split above.
