Ajinkya Rahane Retires: The IPL Career Our Ball-by-Ball Data Remembers
Rahane called time on a 16-year career on July 30. The Test numbers will be quoted everywhere, so we went to our own ball-by-ball database instead: 165 IPL innings from 2013 onwards, 4,539 runs, five franchises, and a final season that was quietly his best in three years.
Ajinkya Rahane announced his retirement from all forms of cricket on July 30, 2026, closing a career of 85 Tests, 90 ODIs and 20 T20 internationals for India. He signed off by referring to himself as "Cap number 278", the number he was given on Test debut. His last Test appearance for India came in 2023, against the West Indies.
Every tribute you read today will carry his Test record, and rightly so. This is not that piece. We hold every ball of the IPL from 2013 onwards in our own database, so we can tell you something the wire copy cannot: what his Twenty20 career actually looked like, season by season, right up to the last innings he played.
The headline numbers, and what they cover
From 2013 to 2026, our data has Rahane batting in 165 IPL innings for 4,539 runs at a strike rate of 126.0, with 441 fours and 126 sixes, a highest score of 105, and 30 scores of fifty or more.
One honest caveat before anyone quotes that as a career total. Our ball-by-ball coverage of the IPL begins in 2013, and Rahane debuted in the competition in 2008. His first five seasons are not in these figures, so treat the number as "his IPL from 2013 onwards" rather than a complete career line. We would rather give you a number we can stand behind and tell you where it stops.
Five franchises, and one long peak
Across those seasons our data has him batting for five teams: Rajasthan Royals (70 innings), Kolkata Knight Riders (33), Rising Pune Supergiants (30), Chennai Super Kings (23) and Delhi Capitals (9).
The shape of the chart above is the story. From 2013 to 2019 he was relentlessly available and relentlessly productive: seven straight seasons between 339 and 540 runs, with 2015 his best at 540. Then came the fall. 113 runs in 2020, and in 2021 a single season total of 8 runs, from one innings. For a batter who had opened for India in Test cricket, that is a brutal way for a season to read.
The comeback nobody talks about
What our data shows next is the part that deserves more attention than it got. From that low of 8 runs, Rahane rebuilt: 133 in 2022, then 326, then 242, then 390 in 2025.
And in IPL 2026, at 37 years old and captaining Kolkata Knight Riders, he made 335 runs in 14 innings at a strike rate of 135.1, with a top score of 67 and two fifties. That strike rate is the highest of any season in our record of him. A player often described as a red-ball batter surviving in a white-ball league spent his final season scoring faster than he ever had.
Where the numbers disagree with each other, and why
There is a second figure on this site worth explaining, because you may find it. Our older static IPL archive, which reaches back to 2008 but stops at the 2025 final, has Rahane at 183 innings and 5,032 runs. Our ball-by-ball database, which starts in 2013 but includes 2026, has 165 innings and 4,539 runs.
Neither is wrong and neither is complete. One has the early years and misses his last season; the other has his last season and misses the early years. They cover different spans, so they should never be added together or quoted interchangeably. Closing that gap, by loading the full IPL history from 2008 into one place, is work we have in progress.
What his career actually says
Rahane retires as a player whose value was rarely captured by a strike rate. Thirty fifty-plus scores in 165 innings is roughly one every five and a half innings, in an era where his role kept changing and his teams kept changing with it. He was moved down the order, moved between franchises, dropped, recalled, and handed the captaincy at 37.
The 2021 line in that chart, a single innings for 8 runs, is the one that makes the rest of it remarkable. Most careers end at that point. His ran five more seasons, and the last one was his fastest-scoring.
