A Six Every 4.5 Balls: Inside Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's 72-Six Season

Some numbers are worth checking twice before publishing. This is one of them, so we went through every ball.

In IPL 2026, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi faced 327 balls across 16 innings and hit 72 sixes. He made 776 runs at a strike rate of 237.3, with a highest score of 103 and five other scores of fifty or more.

Putting 72 in context

The next best six-hitting tally in the season was 43, by Abhishek Sharma. Sooryavanshi hit 67 per cent more sixes than the second-placed batter in the competition.

Rate matters more than volume, because volume rewards whoever bats longest. On rate he still leads: a six every 4.5 balls faced. Priyansh Arya was next at one every 5.4 balls, Rajat Patidar one every 6.2, Abhishek Sharma one every 6.4.

A strike rate of 237.3 across a full season means that every single ball he faced, on average, produced almost two and a half runs. For comparison, the leading run scorer behind him, Shubman Gill, struck at 163.0, and that is a very good T20 strike rate.

The thing that makes this more than a slogging curiosity: he did not sacrifice output for spectacle. 776 runs was the most by any batter in IPL 2026, ahead of Gill's 732 and Sai Sudharsan's 722.

He was dismissed 16 times for those 776 runs, an average of 48.5, which is a genuinely high average for anyone, let alone someone batting at that tempo. Five fifties and a century in 16 innings is a conversion rate most top-order batters would take.

How old?

Our database records his date of birth as March 27, 2011. That makes him 15 for the entirety of IPL 2026.

We are reporting what our own player record holds rather than what has been written elsewhere. If that date is right, this is one of the more extraordinary seasons a teenager has had in a professional T20 league.

What he did in international cricket the same year

Our T20 international data has him in six innings, scoring 193 runs from 102 balls at a strike rate of 189.2, with 16 fours and 14 sixes and a highest score of 81.

The pattern splits cleanly by opposition. Against England he made 14, 13 and 15. Against Zimbabwe in July he made 50 from 19 balls, 20 from 9, and 81 from 49, and finished as Player of the Series with 151 runs across the three matches.

Six innings is a very small sample and we will not pretend otherwise. Three quiet innings against a strong attack followed by three destructive ones against a weaker one is exactly what a small sample looks like. The IPL season is the more meaningful body of evidence, and it is the one with 327 balls in it.

A correction to our earlier piece

We published a shorter profile of this player in late July which stated that we held no meaningful record of him outside T20 internationals. That was wrong, and it was our error rather than a gap in the data. His IPL record was in our database the whole time, filed under a second, differently spelled entry for the same person. We have corrected that article and this piece carries the full picture.

Two spellings of his surname, Sooryavanshi and Suryavanshi, both appear in our source data. We have used one consistently here and are settling which is correct rather than alternating between them.

What to watch

The honest question after a season like this is not whether it happened, because the ball-by-ball record says it did. It is whether a method built on clearing the boundary once every four and a half balls survives contact with better bowling plans over several seasons.
