India Take the ODI Series 2-1: Kohli Reaches 15,000, Gill Makes 223, Hope Has the Last Word
Three matches, more than 2,000 runs, a 406 chase in Guwahati and a 352 chase the other way in Mullanpur. How the one day leg against West Indies went.
India won the one day series against West Indies 2-1. They took the first two matches by eight wickets each, and West Indies won the third by chasing down 352. Shubman Gill, India's captain in the format, was player of the series.
1st ODI, Thiruvananthapuram, 27 September: India won by 8 wickets
India chose to field. Justin Greaves made 101 and West Indies reached 295/7, held there by Kuldeep Yadav, who took 4/40 in his first ODI back and was player of the match.
The chase belonged to Virat Kohli. He made 139 not out from 88 balls, Gill added 110, and India got there in 41.4 overs with 50 balls to spare.
On the way, Kohli became only the second man to reach 15,000 runs in one day internationals, after Sachin Tendulkar, and he got there in far fewer innings. Tendulkar still leads the list with 18,426.
2nd ODI, Guwahati, 30 September: India won by 8 wickets
West Indies batted first again and made 405/7, with Amir Jangoo scoring 114 from 77 balls. On most days that wins a one day international.
India chased it with 39 balls left. Gill made 223 not out from 133 balls and Rohit Sharma made 101 from 75. Three things in that innings had not been done before:
- The fastest double hundred in ODIs. Gill reached 200 from 117 balls, quicker than Ishan Kishan's 126.
- The highest score in an ODI chase, passing Glenn Maxwell's unbeaten 201 against Afghanistan in 2023.
- India's 406/2 was only the second successful chase of 400 or more in the history of the format.
The win gave India the series with a match to spare.
