The scorecard in short
| | Score | |---|---| | West Indies | 171 all out (19.1 overs) | | India | 172/2 (14.4 overs) |
West Indies: two fifties, not enough support
India won the toss and chose to bowl. Shai Hope made 52 from 37 balls at the top of the order, and Sherfane Rutherford made 56 from 34, with three sixes. Between them, only one other batter reached 15.
Naman Dhir, playing his first T20I, took 3/31 from his four overs. Axar Patel took 2/26 and Kuldeep Yadav 2/33, and West Indies were bowled out with five balls of their innings unused.
Kamil Pooran opened on his T20I debut and made 12.
India: the captain finishes it
India lost Sanju Samson for 11 and Abhishek Sharma for 21 inside the powerplay. That was the last success West Indies had.
Shreyas Iyer made 102 not out from 43 balls, with ten fours and six sixes, his first hundred in T20 internationals and the fastest by an Indian batter against West Indies. Ishan Kishan made 37 not out from 27 at the other end, and the two added an unbroken 137 for the third wicket from 67 balls.
What it means for the series
India's batting has now chased 172 with more than five overs left, so the question for West Indies in Ranchi is the ball, not the bat. Their bowlers went for more than twelve an over during the Iyer and Kishan stand.
