West Indies Lead Pakistan 1-0 After a Record Nobody Had Managed Before

West Indies and Pakistan begin the second and final Test at the Queen's Park Oval in Port of Spain today, a match that runs to 6 August, with the home side a win to nil ahead and something genuinely rare already behind them.

What happened in the first Test

At Tarouba, West Indies beat Pakistan by 90 runs. They made 311 and 181. Pakistan replied with 282 and, chasing 211 to level the series, were bowled out for 120.

A first in Test history

On the third day the all rounder Justin Greaves took 5 for 27, and the record inside those figures is the story. He took a wicket in five consecutive maiden overs, five overs in a row in which he conceded nothing and removed a batter each time.

According to the ICC, no bowler in the recorded history of Test cricket had done that before. The previous mark was four consecutive wicket maidens, set by England's Stuart Broad against South Africa in 2016. It was also Greaves's first five wicket haul in Test cricket, in his 16th match.

Why the second Test carries weight

The series is part of the World Test Championship. The first Test gave West Indies 12 points and Pakistan none, so Port of Spain is close to must win for the visitors: a Pakistan victory squares both the series and the points, while a West Indies win or a draw takes the series outright.

What to watch
