Karn Sharma Retires After 19 Years and Four IPL Titles
The leg-spinner announced the end of a career that produced 270 first-class wickets and four IPL winner's medals, but only four international appearances.
Karn Sharma has retired from all cricket at 38, announcing the decision during the UP T20 League and playing his final match in late August. It closes a 19-year career.
The numbers
First-class: 97 matches, 270 wickets at 27.60, with 14 five-wicket hauls, and 2,866 runs. List A: 123 matches, 153 wickets. Across all Twenty20 cricket: 191 matches, 168 wickets. In the IPL specifically: 90 matches, 83 wickets and 352 runs.
For India: one Test, two one-day internationals and one Twenty20 international.
The gap in that list
Four international appearances against 97 first-class matches is the whole story of a certain kind of Indian cricketer, and it is worth sitting with rather than passing over.
Sharma took 270 wickets at 27.60 in first-class cricket, which in most countries is a career that produces a substantial Test record. He arrived in a period when India's spin bowling was as strong as it has ever been, and the queue ahead of him did not move.
His single Test came in Australia in 2014. There was no obvious failure that ended the international career; there was simply no room.
Four IPL titles
What he did have was a franchise career that most internationals would take. Four IPL winner's medals is a haul very few players in the tournament's history have matched, across sides that valued a leg-spinner who could be trusted in the middle overs.
That is a specific and undervalued skill. The IPL's economics reward bowlers who take wickets in the powerplay or defend at the death. A leg-spinner whose job is overs seven to fifteen, on grounds where those overs decide most matches, is doing the work that does not show up in a highlights package.

Ending it in a domestic league
He announced the retirement after his side lost in a state Twenty20 competition, and played once more before stopping. There was no farewell tour and no international send-off, because there was no international career to send off.
Nineteen years, 270 first-class wickets and four IPL titles is a full career by any measure that is not the one Indian cricket usually applies.
