Galle Pays the First Innings Double: 38 Tests in Our Data Before India Arrive
The first innings at Galle averages 385 in our records. The fourth averages 164. That is not a pitch that deteriorates, it is a pitch that changes sport somewhere around tea on day three, and it is where India's two Test tour starts on 15 August.
India begin their two Test tour of Sri Lanka at Galle on 15 August, with the second Test at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo from 23 August.
Before it starts, here is what the ground itself has done to Test matches over the last two decades, from our own ball-by-ball records.
The single most important number at Galle
We hold 38 Tests at Galle. Average totals, by innings:

A first innings at Galle is worth more than twice a fourth. Not slightly more. Twice.
Pitch deterioration exists everywhere, and everywhere it costs the side batting last something. What is unusual here is the size and the earliness of it. The drop from first to second innings is already 82 runs, before any of the classic day four spin has happened. By the third innings the ground is producing barely more than a modern one day total.
What that does to results
Sri Lanka have won 21 of the 38 Tests we hold at Galle, drawn 4 and lost 13. That is a home win rate of 55 per cent at a single venue, which is a serious edge in a sport where home advantage is usually worth rather less.
Across all Sri Lankan venues in our data, 82 Tests, Sri Lanka have won 41, drawn 15 and lost 26. The average first innings across the country is 353, and 12 per cent of matches finished inside three days.
So Galle is not merely a Sri Lankan pitch. It is the extreme version of one.
The toss is a bigger deal here than almost anywhere
Put the two facts together. Runs are most available in the first innings, and the fourth innings is where totals collapse. The team that bats first, bats well and does not need a fourth innings has taken most of the risk out of the match before the second day is done.
That is the shape of a Galle Test: the first two days decide what is possible, and the last two decide who survives it.
India's record in Sri Lanka
Our data holds 12 Tests played by India in Sri Lanka, from 2008 to 2017. India won 7, drew 1 and lost 4.
That is a genuinely strong away record, and it is also nine years old. The most recent match in that set was in August 2017, and not one player from India's current squad is guaranteed to have played in it. Treat the record as history rather than as form.
Why the squad looks the way it does
India named four specialist spin options for this tour: Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Manav Suthar and the uncapped Saransh Jain. Sri Lanka's own selections are not confirmed in anything we have been able to source, so we are not presenting a squad for them.
Four spinners for two Tests is a heavy commitment, and the numbers above are the reason. If the fourth innings at your first venue averages 164, the fastest route to winning is being the side able to bowl the opposition out in it.
What this does not tell you
Averages describe the ground, not the match. Galle has produced high scoring draws and three day finishes, and a well prepared surface in 2026 can behave differently from the ones our averages are built on.
Nor can our Test data speak to current form for these players in this format at anything like the depth our T20 records allow. Our Test and one day archive begins in 2005, and matches involving Afghanistan's men's team are withheld from the public archive we build on, so they are absent.
The one thing to watch on the first morning
The toss, and what the winner does with it. In a match where the first innings has historically been worth 385 and the fourth 164, choosing to bowl is a statement that you know something the ground's own history does not.
