Bangladesh Beat Australia in Darwin, and It Was Not Close
Hasan Mahmud took six for 55, Tanzid Hasan made the first Bangladesh Test hundred on Australian soil, and the tourists won the opening Test by nine wickets.
Bangladesh have beaten Australia by nine wickets at Marrara Oval in Darwin, winning a Test on Australian soil for the first time and going one up in the two-match series.
How it happened
Australia batted first and were dismissed for 198 in 53 overs. Hasan Mahmud took six for 55 from 17 overs, the best figures any Bangladesh bowler has produced against Australia. Steve Smith top scored with 71 from 109 balls and no one else passed fifty.
Bangladesh replied with 426. Tanzid Hasan made 101 from 197 balls, his maiden Test hundred and the first by a Bangladesh batter in Australia. Josh Hazlewood was the pick of the home attack with six for 89 from 28 overs, but the lead of 228 had already decided the shape of the match.
Australia's second innings reached 284. Cameron Green made 104 from 201 balls, an innings that at least forced Bangladesh to bat again, and Mehidy Hasan Miraz took five for 66. That left a target of 57, which Bangladesh knocked off for the loss of a single wicket, Mominul Haque finishing unbeaten on 30.
Hasan Mahmud was named player of the match.
What it means
Australia have lost a home Test to a side they have historically dismissed as a formality, and they lost it inside four days having been bowled out for under 300 twice. Two Bangladesh bowlers took five or more in an innings, which is not a fluke of conditions so much as a sustained performance across both innings.
The second Test begins on 22 August at the Great Barrier Reef Arena in Mackay.
